Prickly Nut Wood
Prickly Nut Wood is a woodland management project based on permaculture principles. The 14 ha ancient coppiced woodland and is designated as a SSSI. The coppiced wood is processed on site and developed into a range of local timber products including yurts, summerhouses, pergolas, trellis, rustic Furniture, barbeque and artists'charcoal, fencing and faggots.
The owner, Ben Law, is one of a growing number of pioneers who are re-creating the human-scale approach to woodland management. In addition to the woodland products he makes, he also grows and forages a substantial proportion of his food from the wood. Living in a sustainably designed house made mainly from materials sourced from the wood, CO2 emissions are kept to a minumum by the use of solar and wind power. Grey water is treated using a reed-bed sewage system and sewage is managed using a composting toilet.Harvesting rainwater for the hotwater system reduces reliance on mains water. Training covering a range of subjects including green woodworking, permaculture and charcoal-making is given by short courses and longer term “apprentice” style training. Member information
