The Eden Project
The Eden Project is quite simply a miraculous place to experience - a living theatre of plants and people which unites visitors with the plants we use everyday for food, shelter, clothing and fuel.
Based in what used to be a china clay pit at Bodelva, Cornwall, Eden began life as the vision of one man - Tim Smit in the mid '90's. With the support of a team of dedicated and ingenious people, work began on transforming the site in 1995 and was completed in 2000. Officially opened in 2001,the Eden Project is now one of the UK's premier visitor attractions with over 1.2 million people coming each year. Combining horticulture, the performing arts and the latest sustainable technologies the Eden Project houses the worlds largest conservatory which is the Rainforest Biome which contains an astonishing array of exotic plants and trees. The huge Mediterranean Biome has flora from the Mediterranean, California and South Africa, while the surrounding 35 acres of gardens have plants from all around the world. With education being at the heart of the Eden Project, the completion of its hi-tech education centre - The Core is a major milestone. This spectacular building with a design based on naturally recurring patterns in flowers and plants, contains exhibitions, interactive displays and dedicated space for workshops. The Eden Project also has a wide range of cafe's and restaurants, a shop selling food and gift items and a prodigious programme of seasonal events, not to mention its academic work in horticulture and other aspects of sustainability. There really is something for everyone.... a truly inspiring place. For more information
